Sassafras tzumu, also known as Chinese sassafras, is a deciduous tree native to Eastern Asia, particularly China, Korea, and Japan. It can grow up to 15-30 meters tall and has a broad, dense crown. The bark is gray-brown, and the leaves are alternate, simple, and ovate to elliptic in shape, with a glossy green surface and a pale green underside. The leaves have an aromatic scent when crushed, much like the related American sassafras tree.
Sassafras tzumu is valued for its wood, which is hard, heavy, and durable, making it suitable for furniture making, construction, and other purposes. The tree also has a history of traditional medicinal uses, with various parts of the plant used to treat skin disorders, rheumatism, fever, and digestive problems.
Sassafras tzumu is also cultivated as an ornamental tree for its attractive foliage and fragrant flowers, which bloom in early spring and are followed by blue-black berries. It is hardy in USDA zones 6-9 and prefers well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. However, it can spread aggressively and may be considered invasive in some areas.
